Description and Requirements
About the Role:
As a Senior ERISA Attorney, you will provide strategic direction and advanced regulatory guidance to USI Retirement’s Practice Areas and clients on retirement and employee benefit matters, including Defined Benefit (DB), Defined Contribution (DC), and Health & Welfare plans. You will collaborate closely with consultants and the Legal Team to deliver comprehensive retirement consulting for qualified and nonqualified plans across private, public sector, and not-for-profit organizations. As both a subject matter expert and team leader, you will handle highly complex client matters, support business development, and mentor Legal Team professionals to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery.
What You'll Do:
- Advise on plan design, compliance strategies, and regulatory requirements.
- Review plan documents, amendments, SPDs, participant communications, and governmental filings, including corrections.
- Provide guidance on mergers and acquisitions.
- Interpret and advise on nondiscrimination testing and technical compliance matters.
- Conduct fiduciary training for clients and advise on plan governance procedures.
- Support business development efforts and serve as a technical resource to the Sales Team.
- Promote consistent processes and procedures to minimize risk and errors.
- Review Legal Team work product and provide guidance, including to other ERISA attorneys.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments; perform research and translate impacts into actionable guidance.
- Develop and deliver internal updates and training on legislative and regulatory changes to USICG consultants.
- Prepare client communications and develop marketing and business-focused materials.
- Draft, review, and maintain service agreements and contracts.
- Manage, mentor, and develop Legal Team members.
- Represent USI as a senior legal professional in client engagements and cross-functional discussions.
What We're Looking For:
- Juris Doctor (JD) required; active member in good standing of a state bar.
- 15+ years of ERISA attorney experience, with deep expertise in retirement plans and applicable regulations (DOL, IRS, FINRA, SEC).
- Ability to interpret and clearly communicate complex technical information to clients and prospects.
- Ability to oversee legal staff work while providing guidance, mentorship, and development support.
- Excellent judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
- Effective collaboration skills with Practice Leaders, Sales Leaders, and senior leadership.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Professional presence with the ability to influence and build credibility with clients and stakeholders.
