General Description:

A seasoned Employee Benefits professional with a broad and developed technical background in both the Employee Benefits disciplines, including familiarity with and knowledge of the following: underwriting, program design, limit review and benchmarking, loss forecasting and loss stratification, general principles of risk management, experience modification review, classification review, coverage placement and carrier relations, and comparative policy wording analysis.  In addition, an effective and organized leader with the ability to establish, execute, and communicate a budget, vision, and strategy for the region’s technical resources. This role is responsible for directing and assigning a staff of professional analysts, claims, and Employee Benefit specialists to assist sales & service teams. Must also be able to effectively participate in sales presentations and internal education efforts with a strong ability to translate technical subject matter, and output into lay terms with financial impact.

 

Responsibilities:

Core Accountabilities:

  • Act as a player coach whenever necessary to deliver required technical support to USI colleagues and clients.
  • Employee Benefits (EB) technical knowledge required:
    • Review EB insurance program structure, recommend improvements, analyze data, and negotiate policy terms and conditions.
    • Utilize benchmarking as a tool for helping clients and prospects optimize the design and structure of their insurance programs and to validate our recommendations.
     
  • Allocate and assign personnel with appropriate talent & background for client and prospect appointments.
  • Participate and contribute ideas and solutions in team "Huddles" (Get/Prep/Keep) for both new and existing clients in order to improve the effectiveness of new business and retention/stewardship meetings and improve the quality and impact of existing client programs.
  • Provide regular client communications and build rapport with largest accounts in regional book.
  • Periodically draft client facing papers on timely topics for distribution to clients and prospects (at least four per year) and coordinate the drafting of case studies that illustrate the results of our sales and service model.
  • Support building and maintaining of strong relationships with insurance carriers so that USI gains an advantage over other competitors in the market.
  • Collaborate with other national technical peers and inter-regional shared resources in building, refining, training, and implementing value differentiators for our EB practice.
  • Work with internal partners and external customers to create improved products and services.
  • Act as liaison between clients, USI and carriers to manage the risk process activities.
  • Comply with USI’s Operating, Financial and Human Resources policies and procedures. Ensure that all activities are performed in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations.
  • Ensure that organizational decisions support company values. Build trust by acting as a role model for integrity, respect, and professionalism.
  • Recruit and ensure the quality of all hires in the region. Mentor and coach direct reports. Continually develop ways to improve the level of knowledge and skills of all staff within the unit. Direct employee training and personal development to improve effectiveness.
  • Promote and enhance the overall reputation of USI with centers of influence, prospects, and carriers.
  • Willingness to travel throughout regional footprint extensively, and occasionally on national basis.

 Key Skill and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Be able to communicate in terms consistent with USI's 4X4 solutions selling model with special emphasis on articulating the financial impact of solutions from a client's perspective.
  • Ability to drive positive results from the markets.
  • Ability to understand and interpret the variables and assumptions that drive the results of modeling and apply that knowledge to determine limits of coverage and pricing of catastrophe coverage's.
  • Ability to understand carrier reports and utilize the data in favorable negotiations with underwriters.
  • Ability to interpret loss forecasting results and offer recommendations on action plans.
  • Willingness to mentor new producers in the USI sales culture with respect to achieving success in the middle market..

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • 15 years plus of insurance brokerage experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree in business or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Practice leadership experience and/or experience managing a team to execute a regional strategy, or at a minimum, a demonstrated ability to grow into a leadership position.
  • Experience in interacting with C-suite level executives.
  • Must be self-motivated and have ability to work independently while motivating a team and prioritizing tasks.
  • Strategic planning experience and responsibility for managing a budget.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate loss trends and loss drivers and execute plans to mitigate client costs.
  • Ability to compose clear, concise, and grammatically correct correspondence and presentations.
  • Ability to generate your own correspondence with the use of agency automation software.
  • A professional phone manner and ability to maintain a “cool head” in dealing with clients, insurers, and general public.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Ability to prioritize workflow within guidelines and in a timely manner.
  • Valid Employee Benefits License must be maintained.
  • Experience in interpreting and complying with contractual coverage requirements of all types.
  • Willingness to commit to a continuing education program and maintain or pursue various professional designations
  • Develop a working knowledge of the agency system (Benefit Point) as well as general competence with third party word processing, spread sheet and presentation systems (Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).

Salary Range: $135,000 - $170,000.

This is a bonus-eligible position with a target incentive of 20%
