General Description:
The Paralegal is responsible for providing technical and compliance related support to our consultative legal team, with a primary focus on the accurate and efficient processing of ERISA-related legal matters. This role involves facilitating various processing needs, managing professional correspondence, and preparing necessary documentation, ultimately contributing to the seamless legal administration of retirement benefits.
Responsibilities:
- Draft various plan documents and agreements for Defined Contribution and Defined Benefit Plans including but not limited to;
- New and restated plans
- Trust agreements
- Plan amendments: board of directors’ resolutions, qualified domestic relations order (QDRO) procedures and participant loan program documents as applicable.
- Summary plan descriptions and other material modifications.
- Assist in the review and processing of Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDROs) and Powers of Attorney (POAs).
- Support the preparation and coordination of general notice mailings to clients about the potential impact of new legal developments on plans.
- Help provide important updates to internal departments regarding legal processing needs in relation to QDROs, POAs and other ERISA related matters that may impact client’s plans.
- Answer incoming phone calls from participants, attorneys, and internal teams, providing clear and concise information regarding QDROs, and ERISA-related inquiries.
- Communicate directions to trustees, recordkeepers, and other fiduciaries regarding actions required by court orders and legal processes.
- Proactively manage and track timelines and deadlines related to processing needs and other ERISA-related legal matters.
- Provide general administrative support to the legal team as needed, including scheduling, data entry, and file management.
- Continuously learn and maintain knowledge of various retirement plan types (e.g., 401(k), 403(b), pension plans) and their associated legal frameworks, particularly ERISA.
- Stay updated on relevant legal developments and regulations impacting ERISA, QDROs, and retirement plans.
Knowledge, Skills and Responsibilities:
- Associate's degree or bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies, Legal Studies, or a related field strongly preferred.
- Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program strongly preferred
- 0-3 years of experience as a paralegal, with specific experience in retirement plans, ERISA, or family law highly desirable
- Proven experience processing QDROs and other ERISA related legal documents is a significant plus.
- Understanding of legal terminology, court orders, and legal procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal information clearly and professionally.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
