General Description:

The Sr. DC Managing Consultant -- ERISA Specialist/Attorney position provides technical support to the team regarding compliance, plan documents, and plan design activities associated with retirement plans. The individual will also work along with the DC Research Consultant to support the sales team, prepare vendor searches, fee negotiations and benchmarks.



  • Provide technical support to the team regarding legislative changes, plan document interpretation, and compliance issues
  • Review and interpret retirement service provider's agreements and product contract provisions
  • Coordinate guidance on specific issues that clients request, corrective actions, or other legal related projects
  • Work with team members on IRS correction programs for their clients, including running calculations in Excel
  • Be prepared to create and automate adjustments to spreadsheets analyzing cost savings achieved for clients and prospects, estimated plan expense summaries, IRS nondiscrimination testing, employer contribution calculations, "true-ups" for matching contributions, ratio percentage test, projections for growth of plan assets
  • Work with sales executives to win new business and establishment of new client relationships including preparation of presentation packages for prospects (e.g., showing potential cost savings through hiring USICG)
  • Participate in educated and informed discussions regarding deliverables such as "business case for change", provider search projects, service provider fee negotiations and benchmarking initiatives
  • Review and analyze service provider proposals and help prepare fee benchmarking and provider search reports
  • Review fee disclosure statements, learn about various service provider platforms, perform calculations of weighted average expense ratio and understand interplay of "required revenue" and revenue sharing
  • Prioritize deliverables and support responsibilities, using "reasonableness checks" for quantitative work, and sound judgment for all client and service provider interactions
  • Complete special projects as requested by the DCC department including service enhancement initiatives, creation of client materials, periodic re-engineering of internal processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory changes, etc., including participation in applicable committees and communication to staff and/or clients as needed
  • Assist and enhance marketing efforts, or special projects; these may include database management under direction of USICG executives
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • 5-10 years experience working on compliance issues of employer-sponsored retirement plans
  • College degree preferred
  • ASPPA credentials preferred
  • Knowledge of defined benefit plans would be considered a plus
  • Strong knowledge of IRS-DOL regulations
  • Strong plan design, regulatory, and compliance testing skills
  • Understand plan documents and restatements, amendments, summary plan descriptions, non discrimination tests, minimum coverage tests, Form 5500, controlled groups of corporations, service contracts, ERISA concepts, fiduciary responsibilities, etc.
  • Understand behavioral finance concepts and automatic enrollment plan designs
  • Must be proficient with computers and quickly competent with new technology tools. Specifically, must have full competence with MS Office Suite products, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe products
  • Must have strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment, multi-task and juggle priorities with minimal instruction and a high degree of accuracy
  • Strong analytical and writing skills
  • Must have strong communication skills both verbal and written
  • Keeps informed regarding industry information and regulations, new product information and technology to continuously improve knowledge and performance
  • Maintain a cordial and effective relationship with team members and vendors and clients
  • Ability to carry out complex tasks with many concrete and abstract variables.
